Teaching Reflections

March 31, 2008

-The students were still working on persuasive letters as they worked on the final drafts we (UNM students) helped them on different ideas and what they could do to improve their essays.

April 7, 2008

-Since the students finished their persuasive letters, we started on poetry.  To get them interested we (UNM students) read our “I Am From” poems to the class. They all seemed to enjoy them. We then had the students spend about 10 min to write down things about themselves, and them we had them share what they wrote.  As the students were reading their was one students that read his and I was thinking WOW not only were his words very different, but he was actually writing.  I worked with him on other writing pieces and I couldn’t get him to write anything.  I really think that his a natural poet and he is really good at it.

-The students worked on their I am from poems, they then got into groups and they shared their poems with each other.  Once they were done with that we discussed as a class what they learned about each other.  They then wrote a few things that they thought that the class was from.  We had a large paper on the board and we had them do a “Our Class is From” poem they all took turns writing something on the paper that they learned about the class.

-When we first got there the teacher had them finish some work that they were working on.  We had originally planned to have them read lyrics from songs and have them identify the Artist, this was to get them more interested in poems.  Then we were supposed to give them copies of different poems.  At this time they were supposed to have a notebook that is using recycled books (from old textbooks or other books), but they had not finished the notebooks.  Since we only had about the last half of the class we only had them work through the lyrics and not the poems we had brought for them to read through.

-For this class we had them get into groups and had given each of the groups a different poem.  Then we had them talk in their groups to how they wanted to perform their poems.  We gave them about 20 min to figure out what they were going to do.  They then performed their poems for the class.  Since we had some time left we let the students get some of their own poems that they wrote, and performed them for the class.
